Timothy David "Tim D." Mohr, affectionately known to many as "Joker," passed away peacefully at 1:58 a.m. on July 17, 2026, at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital in Roanoke, Virginia, after an extraordinary nearly five-year battle with end-stage liver disease. He was 53 years old.

Tim was born in Phoenix, Arizona, on August 13, 1972. His early years were marked by profound hardship. After the tragic death of his father, David, when Tim was just four years old, he was adopted by the Boyle family. His childhood was filled with challenges that no child should endure, leading him to spend much of his youth in a boys' home before returning to his adoptive father's care as a teenager.

As a troubled young adult, Tim made choices that changed the course of his life. At 19, he was sentenced to 30 years in prison for armed robbery committed while under the influence of drugs. During his incarceration, however, Tim began the difficult work of transforming himself. He became an advocate for fellow inmates, working with prison administration to improve conditions and restore privileges that had been unfairly taken away. Through perseverance and good behavior, he earned parole after 20 years incarcerated, successfully completed both parole and probation, and committed himself to building a different future.

The greatest turning point in Tim's life came with the birth of his son, David, in 2012. Fatherhood gave him renewed purpose. He later welcomed his daughter, Allison ("Allie"), in 2016. Tim devoted himself to caring for his children while supporting his then-wife through her military career. Although circumstances later limited the time he was able to spend with them, they remained the center of his heart. If he carried any regret, it was simply that he wished he could have shared more of life's adventures with them.

In September 2021, shortly after his divorce, Tim was diagnosed with end-stage liver disease and given a prognosis of six months to one year. Refusing to surrender to that timeline, he embraced significant lifestyle changes and holistic healing alongside his devoted caregiver and adventure companion, Kate Williams. Together they transformed what doctors expected to be months into nearly five years filled with memories instead of limitations.

Tim loved the outdoors more than almost anything. Whether fishing on Lake Havasu, rock climbing in Colorado, hiking through the Rocky Mountains, the Great Smoky Mountains, or the Appalachian Mountains, he felt most at home beneath open skies. He took particular pride in building enormous, handcrafted campfire rings and was frequently complimented by park rangers for both his craftsmanship and his extensive knowledge of wilderness survival.

Those who knew Tim knew his unmistakable sense of humor. Living up to the nickname "Joker," he found reasons to laugh even during the most difficult moments. In prison he earned another nickname, "Deadman Walking," later tattooed across his back—a reminder of the odds he continually defied. During his final days, he smiled more than he spoke, sharing laughter with Kate, his physicians, nurses, and caregivers despite the pain he endured. His final words to Kate were simple: "Don't cry. Just laugh."

Tim is survived by his beloved children, David Mohr and Allison "Allie" Mohr; his caregiver and faithful companion, Kate Williams; Kate's children, Brantley and Tony, who became part of his extended family; his aunts, Kritina Mohr, Mary Mohr-Lang, Kathleen Mohr-Miller, and Teresa Mohr-Salter; his uncles, Timothy L. Mohr and Anthony E. Mohr; and many cousins and friends whose lives he touched along the way.
