Roy Samuel Stanley, Jr., of Roanoke, better known as Sam, left this Earth on Sunday, November 27, 2022, at the age of 72.

Sam is preceded in death by his parents, Roy Samuel Stanley Sr., and Maude Virginia Riley Stanley; and his nephews, Gary Epperly and David Epperly.

Sam was an indescribable man who was a wonderful husband and friend. He gave his heart to the Lord before his death. A special thanks to Ben Mewald and Dick Grubb who helped him find his way to the Lord. Sam was drafted into the military in 1970, stationed in Korea. He was a dog handler in the military police, hence his love of German Shepherds. He had several over the years, but none compared to the love he had for Max, his current one. He was honorably discharged in 1972. He earned the National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, and was an expert marksman (Expert M-16). Sam was a machinist by trade working at Ingersoll Rand for 29 years and Metalsa for 10 years. He then worked at the VAMC until he retired. He loved helping his fellow veterans. Sam was an accomplished, self-taught tennis player, playing 2 to 3 times a week with friends. Sam also loved his Hyabusa motorcycle, which he customized and rode every chance he had. He had a passion for Corvettes which he'd driven over the years. He sold his Hyabusa and opted for a yellow Corvette. He also bought shoes to match. He was always working around the house or helping a neighbor. He was a very giving man with a kind heart. He once purchased a Corvette for a dear friend to drive because they were forced to sell theirs. He liked hanging out at Ruby Tuesdays and Remini's, making many friends. He never met a stranger.

Those left to cherish Sam's memory are his wife of 20 years, Cindy; his sisters, Diane Anderson, Dreama King (Buddy); his stepdaughter, Angela Mathena; his stepgrandson, Colin Mathena; his nieces, and many special friends.
