Obituary

Robert Elmer Gray, lovingly known as Bob, passed away peacefully on April 21, 2026. Born on February 27, 1933, in West Virginia, he was the son of the late Elmer Gray and Millicent Gibbon Gray.

Bob proudly served his country as a veteran of the United States Army from April 20, 1953, to April 19, 1955. He was known for his hard work and versatility, holding various roles throughout his life. Among them, Bob worked as a Sheriff's Deputy for the City of Salem for eight years, contributed to the City of Salem Parks and Recreation Department—including Moyer Complex, Red Birds Ball Field, Kiwanis Field, and Salem Civic Center Football Field—and held positions at Exxon Mobil and in Aerial Photography. He also coached Ferrum College Softball, and officiated numerous sporting events like football, softball, hockey, lacrosse, and basketball, with softball being his greatest passion. Bob mentored and inspired many athletes, coaches, and officials, sharing his expertise and professionalism generously. Even after retirement, he continued part-time work at the Civic Center and spent several years as a pilot. He enjoyed fishing, camping, tinkering in his garage, crafting picture frames and items for children, and treasured time with his family.

Bob is survived by his devoted wife, Patsy M. Gray; his children, April Jones, Jeffery Booth (Missy Hall), Shawna Gray, and Bryan Booth (Tina Booth); grandchildren; Charles Parker, Jr., Zakota King, Dixie Rencon, Destiny Casey, Mary Booth, Seth Booth, Audrey Booth, Silas Hoback, Jiraiya Whitby, and Asta Whitby; fifteen great-grandchildren; special friends, Bill Jones, Jessee Bass, Randy Iikens, Charlie Hammersly, Teri Atkins and Rick Atkins and other relatives and friends.
