Oliver
Underwood
Apr 13, 1935 — Feb 1, 2022
Roanoke
Oliver Underwood, of Roanoke, Virginia, peacefully passed away on Tuesday, February 1, 2022, at the age of 86; he was the last child out of fifteen of the late Peter and Ollie Mullins Underwood. Preceded Oliver in death is his parents, and his beloved 14 siblings and their spouses.
Oliver loved the land and was commonly referred to as the "Tree Man" after his many years working as a tree cutter. He retired from a long career in the coal mines. One of his favorite pastimes was maintaining his garden every year. You could often find Oliver out on the porch, strumming his banjo. He was an avid member of the Church of God in Roanoke. He raised and traded horses for most of his life and had a "mini-farm" with all different types of animals. Oliver went to Hardy's 363 days out of the year; eventually becoming a "regular" and the workers would get his order of a sausage biscuit and a plain biscuit ready for him when he pulled into their lot. Oliver even sometimes rode his horse to Hardy's, earning him a story and his picture in the newspaper. Oliver was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, great-great-grandfather, brother, and friend and he will be dearly missed; but never forgotten.
Those left to cherish Oliver's memory are his loving wife of 41 years, Linda Underwood; his children, Debbie Underwood, Betty Craig, Susie White, Belve Underwood (Theresa), Carmie Horn, Frank Underwood and Thomas Deaner; step children, Connie Onurfak, and Melody Deaner; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.
An inurnment for Oliver will be held at Mullins Cemetery on Compton Mountain at a later date.
