It is with heavy hearts and deep gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of John Lewis Crush, Jr. Known to many as "JL," John passed away peacefully at his home in Vinton, Virginia, on April 29, 2026, at the age of 84. He spent his final moments surrounded by the family he cherished, a fitting farewell for a man whose greatest joy was the love and laughter of those closest to him.

Born on December 25, 1941, in the quaint town of Fincastle, John was a cherished Christmas gift to his parents, the late John Crush Sr. and Ruby Lazenby. As he grew, his life became a testament to the virtues of kindness, dedication, and family devotion.

John was the beloved husband of Dorothy "Dot" Crush, his partner and confidante, with whom he shared an unwavering bond throughout their marriage. Together, they created a loving home filled with warmth and laughter. His children and grandchildren were the apples of his eye. David L. Crush and his wife Betty T. Crush, along with Jennifer L. Crush and her husband Scot Luke.

To his grandchildren, David Crush Jr. and his wife Emma P. Crush, Matthew Scavelli and girlfriend Brooklyn Peters, and Tanner Crush.

John was not just a grandfather but a guiding light and enthusiastic supporter, often seen cheering on Matthew at his baseball games.

A true gentleman in every sense, John was always impeccably dressed, a reflection of his respect for himself and those around him. He was a proud supporter of the Virginia Tech Hokies, and his passion for their games was known to all who loved him. Yet, despite his varied interests, there was no place he preferred to be than by the side of his lovely bride, Dot.

John dedicated many years of service to the Roanoke Times before retiring, leaving behind a legacy of hard work and integrity. His career was marked by dedication, and he was respected by colleagues and friends alike.

John is survived by his devoted wife, Dorothy "Dot" Crush, his loving children and their families, his cherished sister Shirley C. Woodburn and her husband Kent, as well as a host of dear in-laws, including Violet Hilliker, Norma Jean and Bobby Shelton, Leroy A. Collins, Phyllis C. Dellis and her husband Kevin, and Susan L. Collins.

The family extends their heartfelt thanks to Carilion Home Hospice, especially Jeremy, Hillary, and Tracy, for their compassionate care during John's final days. They would also like to express their appreciation to their neighbor Ralph for his unwavering support and kindness.

A service to celebrate John's remarkable life will be held at Godwin Cemetery in Fincastle, VA, where he will be laid to rest in the town he was born.

The family asks that you honor John's memory by extending a helping hand share your love or a kind word to someone or a family experiencing dementia or Alzheimer's.

Though he has departed from our midst, John Lewis Crush, Jr.'s spirit will forever remain in the hearts of those who loved him. His legacy of love, strength, and kindness will continue to inspire us all.
