Dr. John Richard Craggett of Roanoke transitioned on May 24, 2021 surrounded by his family. He was born in Roanoke, Virginia on February 27,1942. He was baptized at First Baptist Church, in Elliston, Virginia at an early age. Preceded in death by his mother Estelle Craggett Orr and father, Berkley Simmons Sr. and two brothers, Willis Monroe & Chauncey Simmons.

He served in the US Army for 4 years as a Communication Technician. John retired from General Electric after 30 years of service. He was a member of IUE Local 161 Chapter. John "Richard" also held several positions at High Street Baptist Church. He was Founder of the Roanoke Chapter of Christiansburg Institute Alumni Association. In 2004, he received his Doctorate in Christian Education from Bethlehem Bible College. He enjoyed giving back to the community by volunteering at the Salvation Army and being Santa Clause at the Valley View Mall for several years. He also volunteered with the Roanoke City Schools reading program. He was also a part of the Big Brother Big Sister Organization, and he was a member of the African-American N&W Heritage Group.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years Anna Neal Craggett. Two daughters: Leisa (Steve) Brown and Stephanie (Joe) Ferrell. His grandchildren: Amanda (William) Douglas, Michael Craggett, John Brown (Kiara), Natalie Pender, Steve Brown Jr., Kyna and Jawan Ferrell. 10 great grandchildren. Sisters: Ementress Orr, Ruby Waid and Hazel (Jerome) Taylor. Brothers: Rev. Edward Simmons (Christine), James Simmons (Diane), Berkley Simmons Jr. (Rev. Vivian), Brothers-in-law, Raleigh Neal (Joyce) and Delbert (Deborah) Neal, Sisters-in-law, Willa and Karen Neal, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Richard was a great husband, father, grandfather & friend. He was loved by all, and never met a stranger.

Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, May 29, 2021 at High Street Baptist Church beginning at 1:00 p.m. and family will receive vivstors for one hour immediately prior, from 12:00 noon-1:00.
