Joel Spencer Abel departed peacefully in his home, surrounded by loved ones, on the evening of Sunday, January 19, 2025, in Rocky Mount, VA.

Joel was born in Philadelphia, PA on October 14, 1938, and was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He was known for his kindness, charm, wit, and ability to tell stories. His spirit will be missed by all who knew him. He worked in publishing; he wrote various books and articles; he acted in hundreds of productions including plays and movies.

He was preceded in death by his parents Harry Michael Abel and Ceclie Ostroff Abel.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years Donna Ferrara-Abel; two sons, Jonathen Abel, and Jared Ferrara-Abel; daughter-in-law Jessica Ferrara-Abel; grandchildren Jayce Abel, Juda,h and Joyana Ferrara-Abel; his sister Beverly Hanover; as well as many nephews, nieces and loving friends.

A memorial service will be held to honor and celebrate his life on Saturday, February 8, 2025, from 1 PM to 3 PM in the Student Center of Franklin Heights Baptist Church (110 Hilltop DR, Rocky Mount, VA 24151).
