Armstrong, Joanne Roney , age 99, passed away on June 11, 2025. She was the daughter of the late John Arthur and Charlene Davis Roney and was born in Decatur, IL, on December 12, 1925. She was married for 61 years to Maurice R. Armstrong, who predeceased her.
In 1943, she graduated from Stephen Decatur High School in Decatur, IL. During WWII, she worked at the Atomic Bomb Plant in Hanford, WA. When the war was over, she returned to Decatur, IL, and graduated from Millikin University, where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority. She earned a degree in Chemistry, and while there, she met her husband, Maurice Armstrong. They moved to Columbia, MO where she rceived his PhD in Organic Chemistry from the University of Missouri, while she taught at Hallsville High School and worked as a secretary for the Chief Claims Attorney at MFA Insurance Co. They returned to Decatur, IL where Maurietaught Chemistry for 5 years at Millikin and Joanne worked in the admissions Office and a soy bean analytical lab. The rest of Maurie's career was in research and development with E. I. DuPont Co. in Kinston, NC, and Old Hickory, TN. In 2004, Millikin honored the couple with the Loyalty Award, and a room in the Science Center bears their name. Most of Joanne's life, she majored in family, and after her husband's retirement, they minored in travelling to see new sites and to see children and grandchildren, the light of their lives. She was a member of City Road United Methodist Church in Madison, TN.
Joanne leaves three children: Scott D. Armstrong (JoD, dec.), St. Louis, MO, and Annalee Johnson (Wayne). Roanoke, VA, Todd Armstrong (Cindy), Memphis, TN, 7 grandchildren, Andrew (Meilani), Chloe, Abigail, Matthew (Lausyn), MichaeLJohnson, Baylee Street (Jacob), and Alex Armstrong, 1 great grandchild, Tate, and a brother-in-law, Max Armstrong, Hurst, TX.
Memorials may be made to MILLIKIN UNIVERSITY for the Science Department in Maurie's name, and sent to the Alumni Office, 1184 W. Main St., Decatur, IL, 62522-2084.
