Janet Marie Dickerson Doran, born in Roanoke, VA, on April 3, 1941, joined with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and her husband of 63 years, James Samuel Doran Sr (Sam), on Wednesday, August 27, 2025.
Janet is preceded in her death by her parents, Bradley William Dickerson and Virginia Hudgins Dickerson, and grandson, Adam Lee Wheeler.
Janet is survived by her sister, Shirlene Dickerson Meador, and her husband, James G. Meador (Jim). Sons: James Samuel Doran II (Jimmy), Timothy William Doran (Tim), and his wife, Kim. Grandchildren: Jonathan Bradley Doran and his wife Anaka, Mitzi Thorton and her husband Tony, Brandon Wiliam Doran, and his wife Mary Ann, Kalin Ryan Doran, and his wife Katie, and great-grandchildren, Ethan Tinsley, Ava Thorton, Emilia Doran, and Harper Doran.
Janet also leaves behind several nieces that were "her daughters" Debbie Ross, Karen Hurd, Susan Musslewhite, and Becky Grubb, plus a host of other nieces and nephews, whom all really were her "kids".
Janet attended Andrew Lewis High School in Salem, VA, and Hollywood School of Beauty, where she obtained her State certification as a hair stylist. She worked various jobs, including Mick-or-Mack Super Market, Green Market Super Market, until she was able to start her own business and fulfill her lifelong dream of styling hair. She purchased an established beauty shop, The Charme' in Vinton in 1978, where she "snipped and permed" her clients until she retired in 2015.
Janet was always involved in her church, from Connelly Memorial Baptist to Riverdale Baptist, where she and her husband were wed in 1959. She was still attending Connelly Memorial alumni meetings and attended Riverdale until her health restricted attending. Janet joined the Mt. Pleasant First Aid Crew for 25 years, gaining her Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification and Life Member status.
Janet is now resting and in no earthly pain, rejoicing with her husband Sam, and all her beloved family members who preceded her to Glory. Janet will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
The family invites you to a Celebration of Janet's Life taking place at Riverdale Baptist Church, located at 1624 Edgerton Ave, Roanoke, VA 24014, on Saturday, September 6, 2025, at 2 pm, followed by a reception provided by the Riverdale Church Family in the Fellowship Hall. Anyone wishing to provide food for the reception, please contact the church office at Riverdale Baptist at 540-427-3141, with office times: Wednesday 9a-4p, or Thursday 9a-3p. If you wish to send flowers, they can be received on Thursday, at the above times, or before the service on Saturday.
