It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of Dr. James Oliver Roberson, beloved dentist, adventurer, renaissance man, and lifelong resident of Roanoke, Virginia. Jim passed away peacefully on August 5, 2025. A retired dentist, Jim lived a full life enriched by laughter, music, athletics, travel, trail work, and enduring friendships.

Born on October 26, 1936, Jim excelled in athletics at William Fleming High School, where he earned multiple letters in sports, was presented with the B'nai B'rith Student Athlete Award, and was the state wrestling champion in 1955. He continued his athletic journey at the University of Virginia, attending on a football scholarship and playing for the Cavaliers. A devoted UVA football fan to the end, Jim's love for the game remained constant throughout his life.

He earned his doctorate in dentistry from the Medical College of Virginia, served as a dentist in the U.S. Army, and later established his own practice in Roanoke. After retiring from dentistry, Jim embraced travel—exploring the United States, Canada, and destinations abroad.

An avid hiker and dedicated outdoorsman, Jim regularly volunteered as part of the trail maintenance team on the Appalachian Trail. He was an energetic participant in sports throughout his life, as both spectator and player. In recognition of his sporting legacy, he was inducted into the William Fleming High School Sports Hall of Fame in 2019.

Music held a special place in Jim's heart. A multi-instrumentalist who favored the piano, he had a lifelong talent for creating joy and laughter among friends and family. His humor and charismatic personality left a lasting impression on everyone he met.

Jim always had a special place in his heart for dogs and had many cherished pets during his life.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Gertie and Curtis Roberson, and his first wife, Dorothy Roberson. He is survived by his children: DeStacy Roberson, Virginia Roberson, and Ross Roberson (wife Michelle), and grandchildren Curtis and Megan. He also leaves behind his second wife, Martha Sullivan, and his current partner, Betsy Davis.

He is mourned by a large community of friends, hiking companions, and former patients—all of whom agree that Jim was a truly special man with an unforgettable spirit.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Brookdale Memory Care Center in Roanoke for their exceptional care and to hospice teams for their compassionate support during his final days.

There will be no memorial service at this time. A private celebration of life will be announced at a later date.
