Obituary

James “J.R.” Davidson III passed at his home in Boones Mill on October 1, 2026. Born in Danville, Virginia, on July 9, 1951, J.R. is survived by his significant other, Rose; son, Jamie (Carrie), and grandchildren, LJ and Norah. He is also survived by his brothers, Charles (Nancy), Tim (Sheila), and Carroll, as well as his aunt and uncle, Dorothy and Eldridge. He is preceded in death by his father and mother, James Jr. and Mildred.

Known to many by his trail name, Woodelf, J.R. spent as much time as possible outside and hiking the Appalachian Trail. In 2015, he achieved a lifelong dream of thru-hiking the AT with his brother, Charles. He served as a campground host throughout the region and could regularly be found backpacking, camping or caring for the many species of birds in his yard. He was a Hunter Education instructor for 20+ years and was heavily involved with Hunters for the Hungry.

Perhaps the only thing he loved more than being outside was his family. J.R. loved spending time with his son camping, at the beach, and on trips to Dollywood. Later in life, he and Rose enjoyed traveling and camping together, often on the Blue Ridge Parkway. And no matter what else J.R. was involved with, he never missed an opportunity to spend time with his grandchildren or to brag about them to anyone who would listen.

He will be remembered as a loving father, an avid learner, a silly and sharp-witted conversationalist, and a dear friend to many.

J.R.’s family is hosting a small celebration of life for the family. Details of additional arrangements will be shared soon.
