On February 2, 2022, James Sheridan Burnett passed away at his home surrounded by family, 3 days shy of his 88th birthday.

James (Jim, Jimmy, Bernie) was born to Pat and Rose Burnett in Wytheville, VA. In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his sisters Nancy Davis, Marian Aiken, and nephew Chuck Davis.

Left to treasure his memory is his devoted, loving wife of nearly 67 years, Anne Keister Burnett, his 3 daughters, Sherrie Denison (Dennie), Terri Urquhart (Will), Julie Leighton (Joey); his grandchildren Jennifer Loesel (Laurence), Christine Hubbard (Charlie), Rob Urquhart (Nicole), Hunter Padgett and Haylee Padgett, 7 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, and nephews.

A graduate of Radford High School, Jim was captain of the basketball team, played football, baseball and participated in track. He helped his father deliver newspapers, laundry, and worked at Umberger's Supermarket.

Shortly after Jim and Anne married in 1955, he left to serve his country in Germany. Upon his return, he worked for the Postal Service and for General Electric. One more career change landed him a job for 26 years with the Conwood Corporation, now known as RJ Reynolds.

Always a golfer, Jim retired at age 51 which allowed him the freedom to play numerous rounds of golf at Botetourt Country Club and other courses. If asked, he would not admit that he was a pretty good golfer, but he recorded 17 holes-in-one. In the off-season, he enjoyed shooting pool. Jim was a very lucky man. His family will tell the story of the beach trip when Jim walked out to the ocean and several dollar bills washed up on his feet. With his $100 plus, he went back to the beach house and later treated the family to a delicious dinner. Jim and Anne took several trips to Biloxi, Tunica, and other places where Jim's favorite slot machine was "Double Diamond".

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Raleigh Court United Methodist Church Small Group Ministries, 1706 Grandin Rd, Roanoke, VA 24015. A private family celebration of life will take place at a future date.
