Herschel Edward Melton fondly known as Ed, of Roanoke, VA, went to be with the Lord on Monday, August 19, 2024, at the age of 76.

He was born in Hillsborough, FL on September 18, 1947, and is preceded in death by his parents, Edward John Calvin and June Juanita Shaw Melton; stepfather, Spike Nales; and grandparents, Fay and Herschel Shaw.

Surviving him are his devoted wife of 51 years, Linda Melton; five children, Chad Clark (Laura), Michael Smith, Kimberly Herron, Brian Melton (Amy), and Melanie Johnson; 10 grandchildren, Taylor Herron, Jared Herron, Bryce Johnson, Noah Melton, Kaylee Johnson, Ethan Johnson, Aiden Johnson, Cooper Johnson, Emily Farris, and Allie Farris; two great children, Araya David and Malachi David; one sister, Debbie Robinson; four brothers, Richard Melton, Mike Nales, Bobby Nales, and Mark Nales; two sisters-in-law, Bonnie Perdue and Cathy Stinnette; and several nieces and nephews.

Ed loved his country and was passionate about choosing the right leaders. He proudly served as a sergeant in the United States Navy, where he did three tours in Vietnam. His greatest joys in life were his family, friends, and dogs, Lady and Lucky, whom he loved spending time with. He enjoyed fishing and fantasy football, where he had a league of over 30 years and would watch football every Sunday with his son, Brian. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend. Ed loved his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and had a personal relationship with him. His memory will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at Hollins Road Baptist Church on August 31, 2024, at 11:00 a.m., with a visitation one hour prior. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made in his name to Hollins Road Baptist Church (3502 Old Mountain Rd. NE Roanoke, VA 24019).
