Harold Vance
Barnes Jr.
Jan 2, 1951 — Nov 30, 2021
Roanoke
Harold (Van) Vance Barnes Jr. of Roanoke, Virginia peacefully passed away on Tuesday, November 30, 2021, at the age of 70. Harold was born on January 2, 1951 in Alabama to the late Harold Vance Barnes Sr. and Lillian Helms Barnes.
Van was raised in the Roanoke Valley and graduated from William Fleming in 1969. In his earlier years he enjoyed the outdoors and hunting. As the years went by, his love for tinkering with old cars, especially Pontiac GTO's, grew into a passion. It was always his dream to restore a 1931 Pontiac. His love for shag dancing developed in Myrtle Beach, to which he often took more than a few trips a year to dance with friends and hone his skills. He was an avid guitarist and always enjoyed teaching his grandchildren how to play. Van collected many guitars in his life, buying and selling them from his collection. He enjoyed going to all musical events and especially loved local music. Everyone who knew him knows he was an Alabama football fanatic and never missed a game. Van loved all of his pets but most recently cherished his dogs Bella and Lily. He will be loved and missed by all that met him.
Those left to cherish Van's memory are his loving son, Justin Barnes, and his grandchildren, Grace, and Elise Barnes; his sister, Terry Barnes Campbell (John Campbell) and his nephew Jason Campbell; and Kathy DePriest (Randy DePriest), the mother of Justin Barnes; and Missy Coulson Barnes, the mother of Grace and Elise Barnes. Van was a loving father, grandfather, neighbor, and friend whose memory will always live on.
A service for those who loved him will be held on Monday, December 6, 2021 to celebrate his life. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. and end at 4 p.m. with a memorial service officiated by Pastor Mark Long beginning at 4 p.m. at Valley Funeral Home on Peter's Creek Road.
