Elsie Mae Mitchell, affectionately known as "Nanny," passed away on June 8, 2026, in Salem, Virginia. She was born on November 5, 1937, in Roanoke County.

Elsie worked many places throughout her life. In 1977, she worked at Roanoke Valley Psychiatric Center, where she loved cleaning. She also worked at Snyder Nursing Home as a nursing assistant. Her greatest passion was babysitting her grandchildren and cooking for her family.

Elsie also loved tending to her beautiful flower garden. Just like the flowers she so lovingly cared for, her memory will continue to bloom in the hearts of her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Tate and Emma Kirby; her husband, James Mitchell; and her son, Jimmy Trail.

Those left to cherish her memory include her grandchildren, Sean Trail, Kevin Trail and Karen Trail; and her great-granddaughters, Seanna Mae Trail and Summer Trail.

Elsie was laid to rest at Sherwood Memorial Park.
