Obituary

Danita Hutton Alexander, age 67, went to be with Jesus on July 4, 2026, at Lewis Gale Medical Center in Salem, Virginia. Those who knew Danita will remember her as a woman of extraordinary faith, quiet strength, and a heart that never stopped caring for others. A four‑year cancer survivor, she faced every challenge with courage and grace, overcoming cancer and other health struggles with the same determination that shaped her entire life.

Born to Rev. Robert Garland Hutton and Edna Evans Hutton, Danita grew up surrounded by faith, family, and love — foundations that guided her throughout her life. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Linda Crigger, whom she cherished deeply.

Danita leaves behind her devoted husband of 43 years, Dale Alexander of Roanoke, Virginia. Their marriage was a true partnership — built on love, loyalty, and a shared devotion to the Lord. She is also survived by nephews, Jeffrey Crigger of Charlotte, North Carolina, Shannon Crigger of Atkins, Virginia, and Greg Alexander and his wife, April of Roanoke, Virginia; niece Kelsie Alexander of Roanoke, Virginia; sister‑in‑law Diane Alexander of Roanoke, Virginia; brothers‑in‑law Jim Alexander of Atlanta, Georgia, and Mark Alexander of Marion, Virginia, her beloved fur baby, Landon and from Marion, Va, and her best friend since fifth grade, Karen Gillespie. Each of them held a special place in her heart.

Danita loved the Lord with all her heart. She found joy and purpose in Bible studies, intercessory prayer, and serving as a prayer partner at her church. She prayed faithfully for others, carrying their burdens as if they were her own. Her favorite scripture, Jeremiah 29:11, was a promise she lived by: "For I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord. Plans for good and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope." Those words guided her through both triumphs and trials.

A graduate of Marion Senior High School and Virginia Intermont College, Danita dedicated many years to social work — a calling that perfectly matched her compassionate nature. She touched countless lives with her kindness, patience, and genuine desire to help others.

A memorial service will be held on July 25, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. Pastor Mike Laurisen of Parkway Wesley Church on the Mountain will officiate. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital or that a tree be planted in Danita's honor — a living reminder of her strength, her faith, and the love she shared so freely.
