Charlie Lee Nelson, Sr., age 82, passed away on July 22, 2023. He was born on June 29, 1941, in Monroe County, WV, to his late parents, Donald and Ida Nelson. Charlie proudly served in the Navy and later retired after 16 years of dedicated service with Craig County Schools.

A man of faith, Charlie was a devoted member of Light House Baptist Church in New Castle, VA. He also found joy in his memberships with Lone Oak Hunt Club in Covington, VA, and Clear Creek Rod and Gun in Rupert, WV. Charlie had a passion for bear hunting, which brought him immense happiness throughout his life.

Charlie was preceded in death by his sister, Beulah Lopes, daughter Bonnie Woolwine, son Charlie Lee Nelson, Jr., grandson Jerry Woolwine, Jr., and grandson Josh Nelson.

He leaves behind his beloved wife of 48 years, Amber K. Nelson, and is survived by his son Mark A. Nelson (Dana) of New Castle, VA, and daughter Laura Lee Nelson of Waitville, WV. Charlie is also survived by his brothers John Nelson (Nancy) of Scottsburg, VA, James Nelson (Millie) of Ballengee, WV, and Timothy Nelson (Tamara) of Ballengee, WV, along with his sister Brenda Radford of Crab Orchard, WV.

He will be fondly remembered by his grandsons Christopher Nelson (Alisha) of Salem, VA, and Nathan Nelson (Allison) of New Castle, VA, as well as his great-grandsons Gaige Nelson and Benjamin Nelson. Additionally, Charlie leaves behind several nieces and nephews.

In accordance with his wishes, Charlie's body was cremated, and a memorial service will be held at Light House Baptist Church in New Castle, VA, on July 29, 2023. Visitation will take place at 1 p.m., followed by the service beginning at 2 p.m. The clergy conducting the service include Pastor Lee Looney, Pastor Tim Sanderson, and Wayne Sibold.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests making memorial contributions to Lighthouse Baptist Church Building Fund at 852 Paint Bank Rd., New Castle, VA 24127.

Charlie had a close circle of special friends, including Jerry Crawford, Bobbie Branson, Tim Snyder, JR Radford, Larry Meadows, and Wayne Sibold, who will cherish the memories of their time together.
