Obituary

Amanda Rose Wharton

December 26, 1983 – February 2, 2021

Amanda Rose Wharton, 37, of Roanoke, VA died on Monday, February 2, 2021 after a brave and arduous battle with cancer.  She was preceded in death by her father, Paul David Wharton; grandparents, John and Rosa Williams and Paul and Virginia Wharton; and several aunts and uncles.

Amanda is survived by her son, Owen Thurston Amos; mother and step-father, Connie and Milton Carter; sister, Elizabeth Carter; step-mother, Kathleen Snow (Peter); sisters, Molly Wharton and Legacee Wharton; and many aunts, uncles and cousins. Amanda will also be deeply missed by Owen's paternal aunt and uncle, Emily and Jesse Reckley and their children, Sarah, Elizabeth, Josiah and Adino. The Reckley family have lovingly welcomed Owen as a permanent member of their family.

Also left to cherish her memory are special friends, Ashley Smith; Kelly and Katlyn Zinni, and godsons, Robbie and Grayson; Brian Sessions and many other dear friends.

Amanda struggled for most of her adult life with mental illness and addiction disorders. Unfortunately, cancer was another added burden to bear. She became an inspiration to so many people during this time.

Despite her struggles, Amanda found ways to enjoy life.  She grew up loving family beach vacations and was so grateful to Emily Reckley for taking her and Owen on one last beach trip. She loved camping, hiking, traveling, dining out, family game nights, reading and spending time with family and friends.

The family would like to express their sincere appreciation for the generosity, kindness, support and many prayers from those who loved her as well as strangers who were inspired by her story. The family would also like to extend their gratitude to Amanda's medical team for their valiant efforts to save her life.

No service is currently planned due to the pandemic.  A Celebration of Life may be held at a later time. Please make online condolences to her family or share a special memory of Amanda at the guestbook below.
